Gaps in knowledge about breastfeeding among pregnant women

Abstract: The lack of knowledge about breastfeeding is directly related to the incidence of difficulties in breastfeeding, which can lead to early weaning. This study aimed to map the scientific evidence on the gaps in knowledge about breastfeeding among pregnant women. This is a scoping review based on the JBI recommendations. The searches were carried out in December 2022 in the LILACS, BDENF, PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, SciELO and Web of Science databases. Fourteen publications were selected to compose the review, which reveals that pregnant women have weaknesses in their knowledge about the following topics: concepts and benefits of breastfeeding; expression and storage of human milk; colostrum and the myth of weak milk; practical aspects of breastfeeding. The findings of this study can support the planning of educational actions, by raising priority topics related to breastfeeding that should be addressed in prenatal care.
