Domestic violence and breastfeeding in the first year of life
Abstract: The objective of this study is to expose the scientific evidence concerning the impact of domestic violence on breastfeeding in the first year of life. Methods: Scoping review using the following databases: MEDLINE Complete, CINAHL Complete and PubMed, published between January 2018 and September 2022. 49 articles were found and 10 articles were included. The impact of intimate partner violence on breastfeeding practices is not consensual. However, according to most results found, there seems to be a negative impact on breastfeeding during the first year of life, in particular with regards to the exclusivity of breastfeeding during the first six months. Depending on the background and on the type of violence, there exists multiple possible outcomes on breastfeeding practices. Midwives’ intervention is important throughout the whole breastfeeding journey whereby the foundation of their relationship with those breastfeeding must be based on respect and trust.
