Bathing the full-term newborn: scoping review

Abstract: To map the evidence about the birth of the full-term newborn. Scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, carried out in December 2021, in five databases, based on the descriptors newborn and baths, and their respective acronyms and synonyms in English, Portuguese and Spanish. 21 publications were included in this review, which addressed the topic of bathing full-term newborns. Evidence pointed out that the newborn's bath should be postponed to reduce, mainly, hypothermia rates. Better rates were observed when this was performed after 24 to 48 hours of life. The immersion bath was considered in all studies either as the first bath or after the fall of the umbilical stump. It is suggested to promote scientific production for the advancement of the theme and updated health education practices.
