Instruments for assessing the skills of informal caregivers: an integrative review

Abstract: To identify the instruments for assessing the skills of the informal caregiver. Integrative review, in the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Studies that used an instrument to assess the skills and abilities of informal caregivers at home, published between 2015 and 2019, were selected. 914 articles were detected, of which 23 were part of this review. The use of 50 caregiver assessment instruments was found, which were categorized according to the thematic area of assessment observed, being: overload, sense of competence and preparation to care, mental health and quality of life. Three tools for assessing skills and preparing for care were identified, with only the Short Sense of Competence Questionnaire being specific for informal caregivers. It was noted that no instrument was able to evaluate all the properties of care in a multidimensional way.
