Prevalence of Burnout among nurses in oncology settings

Abstract: Oncology nursing is characterized by high emotional demands and continuous exposure to suffering and death, contributing to the development of burnout, defined by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced professional accomplishment. This integrative review aimed to identify the prevalence of burnout among nurses working in oncology units and the associated factors. The search was conducted in the CINAHL Complete and MEDLINE Complete databases, following the PICo strategy and previously established inclusion criteria. Of the 202 studies initially identified, 11 were included for analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of burnout, particularly among professionals with longer work experience, older age, and frequent contact with terminally ill patients. A negative impact was observed on quality of care, job satisfaction, and intention to leave the profession. Burnout constitutes a significant issue in oncology nursing, requiring institutional prevention strategies, psychosocial support, and improved working conditions.
